Rise O Salem 04:25
Rise, O Salem, rise and shine Lo, the gentiles hail thy waking Herald of a morn divine, See the Dayspring o’er us breaking Telling God hath called to mind Those who long in darkness pined O how blindly we did stray Ere this Sun our earth had brightened Heaven we sought not, for no ray Had our wildered eyes enlightened All our looks were earthward bent All our strength on earth was spent But the Dayspring from on high Hath arisen with beams unclouded And we see before Him fly All the heavy gloom that shrouded This sad earth, where sin and woe Seemed to reign o’er all below Thine appearing, Lord, shall fill All my thoughts in sorrow’s hour Thine appearing, Lord, shall still All my dread of death’s dark power Whether joys or tears be mine Through them still Thy light shall shine
2.
O great creator of the world you set apart the soil of earth the irksome waters you drove back immovable you made the land that it produce all kinds of seed with flowers be adorned and bright that it with fruit be plentiful that it bring forth delightful food O cleanse us by your power and grace and heal the wounds within our minds that we with tears may temper sin and grow in peace and constancy may we obey your just commands and keep away from evil things rejoice that we are filled with good and be preserved from deadly sin most loving Father hear our prayer O Father's equal only Son for with the Holy Paraclete you reign through all eternity
3.
as pants the hart for cooling streams when heated in the chase so longs my soul, O God, for thee, and thy refreshing grace for thee, my God, the living God, my thirsty soul doth pine oh, when shall I behold thy face, thou majesty divine? why restless, why cast down, my soul - trust God, who will employ his aid for thee, and change these sighs to thankful hymns of joy God of my strength, how long shall I, like one forgotten, mourn forlorn, forsaken, and exposed to my oppressor's scorn? hallelu, hallelu, hallelujah! hallelujah, oh amen! I sigh to think of happier days, when thou, O Lord, wast nigh when every heart was turned to praise, and none more blessed than I why restless, why cast down, my soul - hope still and thou shalt sing the praise of him who is thy God, thy health's eternal spring hallelu, hallelu, hallelujah! hallelujah, oh amen! as pants the hart for cooling streams when heated in the chase so longs my soul, O God, for thee, and thy refreshing grace for thee, my God, the living God, my thirsty soul doth pine oh, when shall I behold thy face, thou majesty divine?
4.
Come down, O Love divine seek thou this soul of mine and visit it with thine own ardor glowing O Comforter, draw near within my heart appear and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing O let it freely burn till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight and clothe me round, the while my path illuming And so the yearning strong with which the soul will long shall far outpass the power of human telling for none can guess its grace till Love create a place wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling
5.
Jesus calls us o'er the tumult of our life's wild restless sea day by day his sweet voice soundeth saying "christian follow me" Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store from each idol that would keep us saying "christian love me more" in our joy and in our sorrows days of toil and hours of ease still he calls in cares and pleasures "christian love me more than these" Jesus calls us, and by thy mercies savior may we hear thy call give our lives to thine obedience serve and love thee best of all
6.
O God of power, mighty Lord you made the creatures of the sea and some you left within the waves raised others in the air to fly one kind submerged in ocean depths another brought to heaven's height a single source for all of them but each assigned its proper place bestow upon your servants Lord all cleansed in water and in blood that they not know the fault of sin and never know sin's loathsomeness may we not be depressed by guilt protect us from the sting of pride may those despondent not be crushed nor those elated be cast down most loving Father hear our prayer O Father's equal only Son for with the holy paraclete you reign through all eternity
7.
If you had not been with us If you had not been with us they would have swallowed us alive The waters tried to engulf us their fury broke against us we were overwhelmed and we surely would have drowned If you had not been with us If you had not been with us they would have swallowed us alive Blessed be the Lord who did not leave us to be torn by their fangs If you had not been with us If you had not been with us they would have swallowed us alive The waters tried to engulf us their fury broke against us we were overwhelmed and we surely would have drowned Blessed be the Lord who did not leave us to be torn by their fangs We escaped with our lives like a bird from the fowler’s snare the snare was broken and we escaped with our lives Blessed be the Lord who did not leave us to be torn by their fangs We escaped with our lives like a bird from the fowler’s snare the snare was broken and we escaped with our lives Our help is the name of the Lord The Maker of heaven and earth Our help is the name of the Lord

we're lost inside your maze you've fixed us in your gaze you're going to lead us to the center and devour us you're going to chew us up you're going to spit us out you're going to fill us up with love and hope and faith and doubt we're going to go crazy your spirit is a woman made all of light she's hidden herself in blankets of night she wanders the world weeping and crying and looking for the pieces of you trapped inside the world that you have made with your hands the world you gave to woman and man and you're calling to the children of abraham and every tribe and nation from the back of your van to drive us crazy i wish i knew your name i wish i knew your name i wish i could see your face we're trying to express this with our tongues pretty much failing 'cos they're thick and dumb but you gave us these sweet opposable thumbs and arms and legs and a kingdom to come so lead us on with your drum and fife march us out into the night God help us to lose our minds! once we were blind but now we're just plain crazy! we want to know your name we want to know your name we want to see your face even if we have to go insane
9.
remember your mercies O Lord we've got so much hurt remember we've fallen so hard from our concrete towers to earth remember we sleep every night with doors locked and shades pulled down tight remember your mercies O Lord we're already so terrified we just stay in one place we just cover our faces we just look at our hands we just don't know what time it is remember your mercies O Lord just could you please be kind we're grateful for so many things but you also gave us these minds like you gave us the sky and the trees and we couldn't keep them from harm remember your mercies O Lord we've wired our hearts with alarm we just sit in these chairs now we just stare at these screens now we just work all the time now so we just don't know what day it is we're tired and hungry for dreams now we've traded all love for relief our casualties rise like black rivers from deserts and flood city streets remember your mercies O Lord and please don't deny us our song we're rambling and restless and weary we've been in this war for too long we're black and we're blue and we're broke down we've been in this war for too long

there is an empire sitting where we sit there is a barbed wire scratching our cheek in there is a factory made out of cement there is a small flame escapes from the top of it there is a thick wall built out of blue coal there is an army one thousand years old there is a land and it is full of giants but do not lose step and do not be frightened cause there is a great fire and it comes from the mountain we wait in the watchtower trying to keep it lit it cannot be too much longer we wake up slow we come like a ghost town our bandages weave into our wedding gown o sleeping city! o you stealer of souls! do you see us coming? do you see us coming?
12.
there is a tree in every mind and in each tree two birds recline one content to look, one driven to dine at the works of his hand, on the fruit of the vine which bird is the master of your heart, do you find? do you consume every goodness, or say "all things in their time" who is like the Lord on high? his love endures and i don't know why! give us the ear, the heart, the sight to know your face everywhere it hides in your justice you give food to the poor and in your justice you have drawn your sword in perfection your bread, and also your stone you nourish and judge us, but you've never left us alone who is like the Lord on high... there is a kingdom, and there is a king there is wedding and there is a ring on a woman who's sleeping for she is the bride the groom is awaiting on the inside of all sides oh will she awaken to his voice and his touch will she work in the garden he's planted in love or will she sleep through the harvest and miss out on the feast will we go hungry in our greatness or celebrate with the least

about

this record is a culmination of eight years of music at mosaic austin, a small church where i was the music pastor from 2003 till 2011. it is a brief glimpse into what my sunday nights sounded like, from clean to chaotic. it doesn't capture every musician who played there, it doesn't include every song we ever sang. but it is a good introduction to an experience that many people shared together, and that is now nowhere to be found on the earth.

thanks to richard for diligently capturing these performances and overseeing the release of this to the community after i moved on to higher places (literally - new mexico). thanks to the musicians who shared their voices and talents. you made this place a home for me.
